A review published in 2025 combined 57 studies from 35 cohorts. Its mortality analysis found an association between more device-measured daily steps and a lower risk of death.
At 7,000 rather than 2,000 steps a day, the model estimated a 47% lower relative mortality risk. This was an observed association over the studies’ follow-up periods, not a promise of extra years or a personal prediction.
WHO emphasises regular activity and less sedentary time. Step counts can make everyday movement visible, but other activity counts too. An achievable next step can fit daily life better than chasing a fixed number.
